Newcastle, Australia (2004 – present)
Alps (commonly billed as Alps of New South Wales between 2006-2007 around the release of the album of that name) is the solo project of Chris Hearn, from Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia, now living in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Alps plays a mixture of pop and experimental music, using electronic, electric and acoustic instruments, drawing inspiration from Australia and New Zealand’s rich history of pop, rock and experimental music from The Go-Betweens to the Dead C, the Severed Heads to the Tall Dwarfs, and everything in-between.
Alps has released four long playing albums including world tour document ‘Alps of the World’ and the trilogy ‘Alps of New South Wales’, and ‘Alps of New South Whales’, and ‘Alps of New South Wails’; five EPs, and splits with Forest Spirits, Snowfield, Frase+Bri, and Jasmine Loop Control. Alps has released music on a wide array of labels internationally. Currently he is releasing music on his own private press.
Alps continues to tour locally around Australia and New Zealand. He has toured Europe twice, and the United States four times. Alps has had the pleasure of sharing tours with artists as diverse as the slacker pop of Kitchen’s Floor, the disco of RATATAT, the weird-folk of Castanets, and the straight-up weirdness of Social Junk’s Zack Kouns; and has at times shared stages with great folks like Omar Souleyman, Pumice, Xiu Xiu, Wolf Eyes and Scattered Order.
